"not a region that screams individualism." - While I agree Africa is not known as a land of rugged individual entrepreneurs or "go out at 18 to make your own future", on aggregate Africans do seem to have a notable personal sense of individual distinction in personality and social relations/dynamics. Think of manner of dress, humor, and other such things. Given the worldwide population of East Asians and Africans, it's unexpected that more solo African music stars are known globally than East Asian ones( I am aware including African-Americans here is confounded by the fact they sing in English, but still).
The Han population of hong kong, macau, taiwan and singapore is over 30 million; big enough, rich enough and free enough to create an interesting pop culture on par with Japan or South Korea but that didn't happen. I expect even less from PRC.
Maybe you’re too young to remember this, but Hong Kong cinema was huge back in the 90s and 2000s. Both the Kung fu and gangster movies for the masses and the Wong Kar Wai films for the cinephiles.
On the collectivist thing, there have been these pen experiments done to show the difference. 4 pens were the same colour and 1 was uniquely coloured, in the west over 70% of people chose the uniquely coloured pen while in east Asia a similar amount of people chose the same colour pen.
